Nils Frahm & Anne Müller

Occasionally we get to hear some new stuff that seems to distillate what we have so far, and pushes the trends to a new direction. 7fingers is one of these.

Imagine a fresh mix of the minimal sonic landscapes influenced by Radiohead’s KID A and Amnesiac, mixed with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto’s ‘Insen’ with occasional Steve Reich flavored tunes (specially Let My Key Be C) and you’ll have an idea of what awaits you on this.

Nils Frahm is a well known solo pianist due to the Bells and Wintermusic from 2009, and this his is new piece along with Anne Müller cello (a stranger to me until this record). I would say that some of the best stuff that came out on the recent years are Collaborative Projects between Classical and Electronic fellows (Fennesz-Sakamotto, Broderick-Machinefabriek, Noto-Sakamoto etc), and Frahm-Müller is the new slice on this scenario that seems to foresee that we are really on the new-classical trend for the next years. R.I.P. Post-rock you won’t be missed (although this tag appears unto every musician on lastfm).

The Because This Must Be / Augmentation must be my favorite track, with a lovely Italian movie sample over a gramophone scratched record under a reminiscent classical piece of Daniel Bjarnason’s Processions glued together into a Rachel’s/Rachel Grimes flavored piece. Best track of the year so far, perfection all over.

7fingers jumps between classical pieces and glitchy mellow electronic loops and samples, so as a whole it may be a bit two much for the “one track/style only” lovers, but do push it because when you get it you’ll realize that this will surely stands out as one of the better releases of 2010 with superb music from the beggining until the end.

Buy it here while it lasts.

ZU & Heather

Fresh items for my vinyl collection that have just arrived.

Carboniferous is a monster. ZU is an italian band that goes from Experimental/Metal/Jazz (if you need a label to see if it’s your cup of tea), and their latest work was finally released on vinyl. Huge recommendation for the ones who like to be thrilled. Buy it here [500 copies on grey vinyl / 1500 copies on black vinyl].

From the Ground is a different animal (more for the cats and birds lovers). A truly beauty, and one of 2010 best debuts that dwells between Folk and more atmospheric maze with lovely string arrangements by his brother and modern classic extraordinaire Peter Brotherick . Buy it here.

Collectables Unleashed

May 31, 2010

After almost 6 years, I’m starting to build up my personal website. For now I have Collectables up and running: A place to share some techniques/critiques on branding and typography; a place to share some Color Correction techniques, and promote the music that I really, really, really like.

Say hello, if you like, otherwise my words and images will echo.
